Places to See in the Old Town of Setenil de las Bodegas
Setenil de las Bodegas is one of Andalusia's famous white villages. However, its location is what sets it apart from the others. As you wander through the streets, you will see rock formations extending directly over the houses. This creates a truly unique experience for visitors.
Whether you start your walk along the Ruta del Amor or the Ruta de las Calles Cuevas is entirely up to you. However, we recommend exploring the entire village so you do not miss any photo opportunities. It is not particularly large.
It is also worth leaving the centre and heading up to the higher parts of the village. From the various viewpoints, including the Mirador Balcón de Setenil de las Bodegas and the Mirador del Carmen, you can enjoy wonderful views over the village.
To reach the cave houses, head towards Calle Cuevas del Sol and Calle Cuevas de la Sombra. Along the gorge, you will find restaurants, bars and small shops inviting you to sample local delicacies and buy locally made products.
Setenil de las Bodegas in Spain is particularly well known for pig farming and the many products made from pork. In addition to cave houses, steep cliffs and chorizo, you will also find ceramics and delicious pastries.
On Calle Herrería, on your way to the castle, you will come across "Bésame en este Rincón", which means "Kiss me in this corner". The sign invites you to kiss the person standing next to it. Naturally, we took the opportunity to snap some photos, but there is absolutely no obligation to do so!

Historic Buildings in Setenil de las Bodegas
Unlike most former Moorish fortresses, Setenil de las Bodegas is not situated on top of a hill or mountain. Instead, the village was built in the valley of the Río Trejo, with houses constructed directly into the rock.
The Moorish influence can still be seen in other parts of the village. At Plaza Andalucía, you will find the current town hall and the Atalaya Árabe tower, also known as El Torreón. The Castillo de Setenil de las Bodegas is the former castle or fortress, built in the seventh century. Its ruins can still be explored. A gate in the Mudéjar style can also be found on Calle San Benito.
However, it is believed that the Romans also lived in Setenil. Not far from the present-day village lie the remains of the ancient settlement of Acinipo. The name Setenil is also thought to derive from the Latin phrase septem nihil, meaning "seven times nothing". The addition "de las Bodegas" is no longer particularly relevant, as the vineyards and wine estates in the region were devastated by a plague in the 1860s and never fully recovered.
Finds from the surrounding caves in the Sierra de Cádiz and Sierra de Grazalema suggest that people may have lived here as long as 25,000 years ago, long before the arrival of the Moors and Romans.
In 1484, Setenil de las Bodegas was reconquered by the Christians. As in many other Andalusian villages, there are several churches to visit. We particularly liked the rather unassuming Ermita de San Sebastián. The Iglesia de Nuestra Señora de la Encarnación was built over several centuries and stands on the site where the village's main mosque once stood.

Most of Andalusia's historic villages were built on hills or mountains. Setenil is an exception. It was built in a river gorge, with houses tucked beneath and into the surrounding rock formations. This was no coincidence, as the natural shelter provided by the rocks offered protection comparable to that of a high, defensible position.
How long should you stay in Setenil de las Bodegas?
We recommend spending at least one day in Setenil. The drive from Ronda and other nearby towns is relatively short, but it is best to set off early. If you have more time on your journey through southern Spain, we recommend staying overnight in the village.

If you enjoy unusual destinations and are already in the area, Setenil de las Bodegas is definitely worth a visit. It is one of those places you are unlikely to forget in a hurry. You will not find many action-packed activities here, but it is an excellent destination for photography, exploring a distinctive village and enjoying the surrounding countryside.
