Things to See in Estepona Old Town

A holiday destination with something for everyone? That's Estepona. The town enjoys a beautiful setting that appeals to nature lovers thanks to its mountains, beaches and close proximity to the Sierra Bermeja. In the town centre itself, you can experience the area's history and culture at close quarters.

  • Orchidarium

  • Plaza de las Flores

  • San Luis Castle

  • San Isidro parade and celebrations

  • Santa María Church

The Ruta de los Murales is also a great way to get younger visitors interested in the town. The route features huge murals covering entire building façades, effectively transforming Estepona itself into an open-air museum. Around 50 of these modern works of art can be discovered and admired. Can you find them all?

The Orchidarium is another attraction suitable for visitors of all ages. More than 1,300 orchid species and 125 other types of flowers are waiting to be photographed. Located right in the town centre, it is an attraction you can enjoy whatever the weather.

The town centre itself, with its pretty narrow streets and numerous squares, is also perfect for taking your time and soaking up the atmosphere. One of the most popular is Plaza de las Flores. Flowers and plants are an important feature throughout Estepona, with many houses decorated with colourful flower pots.

Exactly how long Estepona has been inhabited is disputed. Evidence has been found not far from the town suggesting that people were already living in the area during prehistoric times. The Phoenicians and Romans also had settlements nearby. The Moors left behind, among other things, San Luis Castle, the ruins of which can still be visited today.

Those who want to continue their journey through Estepona's history into more recent times will come across the bullring, the Punta Doncella lighthouse and the Iglesia Parroquial de Santa María de los Remedios.

The town's patron saint, San Isidro Labrador, is honoured every year on 15 May with a traditional parade. People dress in traditional clothing, and there are plenty of animals to see, including goats and horses. Celebrations continue for five days, with various competitions and events involving both people and animals.

A stroll along the Paseo Marítimo takes you past numerous restaurants, cafés and the occasional chiringuito. The promenade eventually leads you to Estepona Marina, where you'll find even more places to eat and enjoy the coastal atmosphere.
