Castillo de Gibralfaro Málaga: Tickets, Opening Hours and More

The city of Málaga has plenty of attractions to offer. However, for the best views, head to the Castillo de Gibralfaro. This fortress is located on the eastern edge of the city and offers stunning views across the provincial capital and its coastline.

The History of Castillo de Gibralfaro
Gibralfaro is a hill in Málaga that rises 132 metres above sea level. Its current name derives from the Arabic name Jbel Faro. A castle stands at the top, overlooking the city and the Mediterranean Sea. Its defensive walls are connected to the Alcazaba.
The hill’s strategic position made it an ideal site for a fortress as early as the time when the Phoenicians founded Málaga, around 770 BC. Initially, there was a lighthouse here. In 929 AD, Caliph Abd al-Rahman III strengthened the site and turned it into a fortress, which was further expanded by Yusuf I in the 14th century. The walls were then extended as far as the royal palace. The name “Rock of the Lighthouse” (Jbel Faro) has remained in use to this day.
During the Christian reconquest of Andalusia, King Ferdinand and Queen Isabella besieged the Castillo de Gibralfaro for three months in 1487. Eventually, hunger forced the Moors to surrender the castle and relinquish control. The fortress continued to be used as a military base until 1925, with troops stationed there.

What to Expect During Your Visit to Castillo de Gibralfaro
Today, the Castillo de Gibralfaro is largely a ruin. However, there is much more to admire than crumbling walls. The Torre Blanca (White Tower) is one of several viewpoints. The views over the city are just as impressive as the efforts made to enhance this popular destination for visitors.
At the end of 2005, a dense forest of pine and eucalyptus trees was planted on the hill. Inside the Castillo de Gibralfaro itself, a small museum brings the castle’s history to life. The Centro de Interpretación de Gibralfaro is housed in the fortress’s former gunpowder store.
If you decide to walk up from the city, it is best to avoid doing so in the height of summer. The climb is not easy, so make sure you bring plenty of water and wear comfortable, sturdy shoes.
