Flamenco is as much a part of Andalusia as cheese is of the Netherlands. The term refers both to the music, featuring guitar playing and castanets, and to the dance itself.

It's worth knowing that Spanish flamenco originated in Andalusia, more specifically within Gitano culture. The Gitanos are the Romani people who call this part of southern Spain home. Nowadays, however, you don't have to belong to this community to enjoy flamenco. Everyone is welcome to experience and appreciate this art form.

But What Exactly Is Flamenco?

Originally, the term flamenco was used in Spain to refer to the Gitanos, or Romani people. In English, the word means Flemish. One explanation suggests that Flemish people and Germans were mistakenly regarded as one and the same.

So what does this have to do with the Romani? One theory attempts to explain the connection by pointing to the 18th century, when German troops occupied the Sierra Morena. Their presence was resented, much like that of the Gitanos.

Since 2010, flamenco has been recognised by UNESCO as an Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. This demonstrates the importance of the art form and how much recognition flamenco dancing has gained since its beginnings. The dance is thought to have originated in India before being brought to Andalusia by the Romani people. There, it encountered Arab-Andalusian musical traditions. Instruments such as castanets and tambourines date back to the Al-Andalus period and often feature in flamenco performances.

Flamenco as a genre is believed to have emerged towards the end of the 18th century. Jerez de la Frontera is often cited as one of its key places of origin, where this passionate dance and its music, accompanied by the clattering of castanets and the sound of guitars, are said to have taken root.

Dancers and singers from several dozen Gitano families developed this art form over generations. They are regarded as the original custodians of flamenco and helped make its distinctive style famous throughout Spain and eventually around the world.

Flamenco in Germany

Of course, experiencing this art form and Andalusian folk music in its homeland is wonderful. However, you don't necessarily have to travel to Spain to enjoy it.

The guitarist Guido Duclos also organises excellent flamenco concerts in Germany, inviting renowned flamenco artists to perform. You can find details of upcoming events on his website: www.duclos-flamenco.com/concerts/

FAQ

Where did flamenco originally come from?

Flamenco originated in southern Spain, more specifically in Andalusia. Seville is sometimes said to be its birthplace, although this claim is disputed depending on the source. What is clear is that flamenco is closely associated with Gitano culture and became popular throughout Andalusia.

What does flamenco dancing express?

Flamenco is a highly passionate dance that expresses a wide range of emotions, from joy and exuberance to suffering, rebellion and despair. It brings together the music of Spain's Romani communities and the folk traditions of Andalusia.

What is the most famous dance in Spain?

Flamenco is widely regarded as Spain's most famous dance. However, flamenco encompasses more than the dancing itself: it also includes the accompanying music. Both are integral to the art form, as one would be incomplete without the other. Spain has other well-known dances, too, including the paso doble.

How long does a flamenco show last?

An authentic flamenco show typically lasts between 60 and 90 minutes. Some performances are shorter, lasting around 45 minutes, particularly at smaller tablaos or during early shows.

Should I book flamenco show tickets in advance?

Yes, booking in advance is recommended. Shows in Seville, Granada and Málaga are particularly popular, and many flamenco performances in Andalusia sell out quickly, especially at weekends and during the peak tourist season.

What are tablaos?

Tablaos are small, traditional flamenco venues where dancing, singing and live music are performed on an intimate stage. They are considered one of the most authentic ways to experience the art form and folk music of Andalusia.
